What Is Reiki?

Reiki is a Japanese technique for stress reduction and relaxation that also promotes healing. It is administered by "laying on hands" and is based on the idea that an unseen "life force energy" flows through us and is what causes us to be alive. If one's "life force energy" is low, then we are more likely to get sick or feel stress, and if it is high, we are more capable of being happy and healthy.

The word Reiki is made of two Japanese words - Rei which means "God's Wisdom or the Higher Power" and Ki which is "life force energy". So Reiki is actually "spiritually guided life force energy."

How Does Reiki Work?

A treatment feels like a wonderful glowing radiance that flows through and around you. Reiki treats the whole person including body, emotions, mind and spirit creating many beneficial effects that include relaxation and feelings of peace, security and well being. Many have reported miraculous results.

Reiki is a simple, natural and safe method of spiritual healing and self-improvement that everyone can use. It has been effective in helping virtually every known illness and malady and always creates a beneficial effect. It also works in conjunction with all other medical or therapeutic techniques to relieve side effects and promote recovery.

How Does Reiki Work on Animals?

Working with Reiki on animals can be done several ways:

  • Sitting or standing near the animal in a safe, preferably quiet, comfortable area where the animal and Reiki practitioner are undisturbed.
  • Hands on (if the animal shows it is their choice). Your animal may, part of the way through the session, settle down in your lap or position themselves against your hands. This is done only with the animal's permission.

A horse for example may come over and move themselves so you are touching them.
A dog, cat, bunny, ferret etc. may crawl up in your lap or sit right in front of you.

What Should I Expect?

A safe and caring Reiki session lasts about 30-40 minutes. Your pet will generally need 3-4 treatments on consecutive days. Reiki healing builds, one session on another when given close together, preferably on consecutive days. For most animals, they prefer their first experience with Reiki energy, to be a short distance away. This gives them the freedom to move in and out of the energy and to position themselves where the Reiki energy will help the most.

Will A Reiki Treatment Interfere With My Pet's Medication Or My Vet's Treatment?

No, Reiki works in conjunction with all other medical or therapeutic techniques to relieve side effects and promote recovery.

When is Reiki Appropriate For My Pet?

Reiki energy treatments have been used in numerous animal shelters around the world to help injured pets recover, help them relax and adjust to their new situation, recover from surgery and help some of them to be
come adoptable.

  • Reiki is beneficial if your pet will be having surgery as well as post-surgery. Reiki is beneficial for any animal who has over exerted themselves and are sore.
  • Reiki is beneficial for pets with cronic problems such as arthritis or hip problems.
  • Reiki is beneficial in transition situations such as the loss of a companion pet or the loss of an owner.
  • Reiki is beneficial for Senior and Special Needs pets.
  • Reiki is also beneficial for helping a pet who is dying as well as the family members.

Memory Tree for Your Pet

My good friends Susan and Milt Sanderford have begun to create a beautiful non-denominal spiritual oasis, Casa de Santa Maria , in San Luis, CO. The cornerstone of this 38 acre oasis is Mother Mary's Garden. In the center of this every growing garden is a beautiful handcarved statue, in red cedar, of Mother Mary. A tree planted there for my dog Bonnie.
